is a lecturer in Anthropology of Development at the University of Edinburgh. She is one of the Programme Directors of Edinburgh’s MSc International Development and teaches postgraduate courses in Anthropology of Development – with a special focus on faithbased humanitarianism, local NGOs and the Syrian conflict – and core courses in Social Anthropolog. For her doctoral studies, Ann did fourteen months of ethnographic fieldwork with Syrian refugees in Mafraq, a border town in northern Jordan, in 2016/17. Her PhD thesis explores how current forms of displacement and precarious refugee livelihoods are embedded into more longstanding labour migration schemes and transnational labour markets in the Middle East. In 2019, Ann conducted research with Syrian and Congolese youth in Uganda and Jordan as a research fellow on a pilot study on adolescent refugees’ reproductive health (University of Edinburgh). Before her PhD, she worked with the International Organization for Migration in Geneva. Ann’s research interests include forced and labour migrations in the Middle East; rural development; gender; research ethics; humanitarianism and Big Data.
